Mission Summaries > July 1944
The German's "Atlantic Wall" had been breached by the Allied foeces and now the push was on to push the Germans back and recapture Paris. With the Luftwaffe pretty well knocked out of the picture, the primary targets became the infamous "Buzz Bomb" or V-1 rocket launch site, transportation centers, and oil refineries. A tactial support mission, unusual in its nature that it required the heavy bombers to fly low enough that small arms fire became increasingly dangerous. That mission was in support of the St. Lô breakout on the 24th. Due to a wind change
and their orders to drop on the smoke which now drifted back over friendly lines, bombs from 35 bombers fell within US
lines; 102 US troops, including Lieutenant General Lesley J McNair, are killed
and 380 wounded.
